The Evolution of Shapewear
Join us in discovering how shapewear has changed throughout the years.
The desire for “an ideal body shape” can be seen in ancient civilizations like Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Women used various types of uncomfortable and restricting garments and corsets to enhance their figures as early as 1,600 BC.
Early corsets were stiffened with materials like wood, whalebone, or metal to create an hourglass figure by cinching the waist. Later, when they became increasingly popular, their construction evolved with the use of new materials such as steel boning and lacing techniques. Corsets were tightly laced to achieve a tiny waist, often resulting in health issues for women.
Later on, girdles and waist cinchers were designed to shape and support the waist, hips, and buttocks. These undergarments were often made of elastic materials and provided a smoother silhouette under fitted clothing.
In the 1980s and 1990s, advancements in textile technology led to the development of more comfortable and flexible shapewear.
