Mindful Motherhood: Raising Awareness for Maternal Mental Health

May 7, 2023 | Shapermint Team

New Post

May is Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about the mental health challenges that women may face during and after pregnancy. It's an opportunity to educate ourselves and those around us about the importance of maternal mental health and to provide support for those who may be struggling.

History of Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month

Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month began in 2016 as a way to increase awareness about the mental health challenges that women face during and after pregnancy. It was created to address the stigma surrounding maternal mental health issues and to promote the importance of mental health support for new and expecting mothers.

  • 10% to 20% of pregnant women will experience postpartum-related illnesses
  • 40% of deaths within the year after pregnancy were from mental health-related causes
  • 70% of mothers will hide or underplay the severity of their illness

Why it's important to celebrate

Maternal mental health is a critical issue that affects millions of women each year. According to the American Psychological Association, one in seven women experience postpartum depression, and many more experience anxiety or other mental health challenges during pregnancy or after childbirth. By raising awareness and providing support for these women, we can help them to overcome these challenges and build healthy, happy families.

How to Celebrate Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month

Here are five tips for celebrating Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month and supporting the women in your life:

1. Start a conversation: Talk to your friends, family, and coworkers about maternal mental health and the importance of mental health support for new and expecting mothers.

2. Share resources: There are many resources available to women who may be struggling with maternal mental health issues, such as therapy, support groups, and hotlines. Share these resources with those who may need them.

3. Offer support: If you know someone who is struggling with maternal mental health issues, offer your support and encouragement. Let them know that they are not alone and that help is available.

4. Practice self-care: Taking care of your own mental health is just as important as supporting others. Make time for self-care activities such as exercise, meditation, or spending time with loved ones.

5. Get involved: There are many organizations and campaigns dedicated to raising awareness about maternal mental health. Consider getting involved in these efforts, either by volunteering or making a donation.
