How to Shape: Meditation Basics

January 8, 2022 | Shapermint Team

Have you ever felt like you’re drowned out by the noise? Do you feel tired immediately after waking up? Do small things make you feel anxious, nervous, or irritated? Don’t worry, you are not alone. These events often happen when we lose connection with ourselves.

So what’s the next step?

Being aware of our thoughts, feelings and bringing back mindfulness. I know you’re wondering “how”? Simply through meditation. Most of us are afraid to start meditating because we assume that we have to be enrolled in an expensive class, or we need fancy scented candles and oils (they help, but not they are not required). But really, meditating is simple and doable - anytime, anywhere.

How to meditate in 5 steps

How to meditate:

1. Find a calm and quiet place.

It can be on your bedroom floor, in your bathroom, in your backyard, or on your balcony. Any part of your home where you can sit comfortably.

2. Set a time.

You don’t need a full-blown 1-hour meditation session. You can start small with a 10-minute sesh. Once you’ve established a routine, you can add extra 5 minutes the following week.

3. Be in touch with your senses.

This starts with the correct posture. Relax and release the tension in your body. With eyes closed, breathe in through your nose and breathe out through your mouth.

4. Mind what matters.

Now that you’ve found your calm moment, let your mind wander through your thoughts. Slowly untangle each thought and emotion. And most importantly, do not judge yourself.

5. Stay calm and carry on.

Focus back on your deep breaths and slowly open your eyes. Sit still for a few seconds and notice your surroundings and how your body feels. Carry the calm feeling as you go on your day.

Meditation allows us to face our thoughts and emotions calmly and less reactively. When all our senses are connected, then we will be able to rationally think through things and acknowledge how we are feeling.

But then, we need to establish a routine until it becomes a part of our everyday lives. Meditation is a skill that we must train with repetition. Don’t pressure yourself; enjoy and trust the process.
