Body Positivity vs. Body Normativity

November 9, 2021 | Shapermint Team

New Post

Body positivity and body normativity. Are they the same? How are they different? Let’s try to break it down.

What is body positivity?

Body positivity started as an equality rights movement. In 1969, Bill Fabrey, an Engineer from New York City began handing out copies of an article he read about the unfair ways of treatment to people of bigger sizes. He himself has witnessed it through how his wife was treated because of her size.

The movement has certainly evolved over the years, and it’s now as we know it to be today: Body Positivity. Most notably, on social media where plus-sized influencers, celebrities, and people around the world have joined the conversation.

What is body normativity?

Body normativity is self-acceptance. You don’t have to love your body, but you accept it with its flaws and imperfections. It’s a conversation of real women of all shapes and sizes, not just plus-sized. It’s seen as more inclusive, diverse, and more every day. But it’s not just about shapes and sizes! It’s also about pores, hairs, disabilities, wrinkles, stretch marks, and more.

Can you be body-positive while encouraging body normativity at the same time? The answer is yes. But how? Here are a few things that you can start practicing.

1. Positive Affirmations

Write it in your journal, in a post-it, in your mirror, whichever way works best for you. Just keep reminding yourself every day.

2. Forget about the scale

As the saying goes… don’t let the numbers on the weighing scale define your worth.

3. Stop comparing yourself to others

Possibly the unhealthiest trait that you should stop right now. Remember, everybody is different and your uniqueness makes you, you!

4. Find a positive space

Whether it’s in social media or IRL, you should surround yourself with positivity. Find a supportive squad, talk to your family members, and follow personalities or brands that promote positivity.

5. Focus on yourself

You can start by listing the things you like about yourself. Try picking up a new hobby, or follow your passion. And don’t forget to do something nice for yourself like a bubble bath and a long, uninterrupted sleep.
